Construction Safety - Ditch collapse injures man at Ida County, Iowa construction site.

By Steve Lombardi

ADVERTISEMENTS

In yesterday's stories is one about a man being injured in a ditch collapse in Ida County, western Iowa. I read this and it brought to mind our July focus at InjuryBoard, construction safety.

We've posted about construction safety and did so for a full month back in July 2007. Megan, Justin and I explored construction safety during July and touched on trench collapses along with cranes, fall protection, job safety plans, OSHA, IOSH, See Construction Safety - Construction site and construction trades safety month - Protecting your life. I was pretty stern in advising to become educated about safety issues even if the foreman didn't like your questions. For the most part our posts included ditch safeguards for construction site safety plans and how to stay out of trouble. Megan Roth really did a good job of discussing Construction Safety - Trench Collapse article on July 11, 2008. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has regulations that if followed should keep you safe. A quick search of the InjuryBoard regional blog posts shows several articles having to do with construction safety but not many about ditches collapsing. That isn't because it's not a problem in the construction trades, only that the lawyers chose to discuss other issues in this area. I see there was one by Nick Avgerinos of Chicago, Illinois. His is Unlucky Break: Construction Workers Injured in Casino Ramp Collapse, by Nick Avgerinos, Chicago.

If your work on site and need to better understand how to protect yourself, then read these posts and follow up on the OSHA and the NIOSH sites.

Be safe, not sorry.
