: The GavelResistance Mounting to FL Court Overhaul?
By Peter Hardin
A Republican-led proposal to overhaul Florida’s Supreme Court continues to get a shellacking in the news media, as its fate in the state Senate remains uncertain.

The Senate’s second-ranking member, Republican Mike Bennett, recently predicted the measure would not win Senate passage, according to a Sarasota Herald-Tribune column by Mike Tryon, entitled “Standing up for supreme independence.” The proposal was approved by the House on Friday; it would expand the high court from seven to 10 members and split it into two divisions.
Tryon wrote that “a concerted effort is mounting statewide to stop the pillaging” implicit in the proposal passed by the House. He alluded to the efforts of a new group called Floridians for Fair and Impartial Courts (see Gavel Grab).
A Miami Herald editorial was headlined, “Don’t tamper with state’s Supreme Court: Legislature’s effort to overhaul judicial system is based on spite.”
The court overhaul bill and related measures that passed the House were outlined in a Legal Newsline article. It noted that the central measure also would provide for Senate confirmation of state Supreme Court justices. You can find out more about the related measures from Gavel Grab.
