Sayonara to Slumming

By Kevin Funnell

ADVERTISEMENTS

"Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."
---Matthew 7:6

In the past three weeks, I have been hit smack in the face with two examples of classic humble-pie-eating justice that have demonstrated to me that God is bound and determined to teach me some final lessons in humility. I have to say, those lessons have been so effective that instead of feeling remorse, I have laughed out loud...at myself. And I have not been this amused in some time.

On the other hand, in the past week I have received one heart-felt communication of such utter sincerity and simple honesty that it's made me realize that God is separating me from the bad and orientating me toward the good with an alacrity that, while it is gratifying as well as humbling, begins to fill me with the thought that perhaps time, which does not limit God but which limits me (at least this version of "me"), may be nearing the quarter-full mark on the gas gauge of life.

I think that it's time to separate the wheat from the chaff, leave the chaff to God's good graces, and focus on the wheat. I think I may need to do that not merely for the sake of myself, but for the sake of those I touch.

It's time to leave the slumming to the dilattantes and become serious.
