Help a Manager Improve Someone's Performance

ADVERTISEMENTS

The human resources professional's job is to help improve performance. Nowhere else can the human resources professional shine than in helping a manager improve his employees' performance. All too often managers are too close the situation, feel a lack of confidence in managing employees and need a sounding board when faced with a problem employee. If a manager knows you have her back she is more likely to trust you and reach out to you in the future.

Don't just be the gate keeper and restrict your involvement in employee performance management to handling the paperwork as the offending employee goes out the door.

  • Be available as a sounding board but make sure the manager and employees know that the manager is in charge.
  • Coach the manager through conversations she will face.
  • Offer to resolve conflict within the department.
