More about that in a minute. Now, I want to talk Olympics. I don’t know about you, but I’m addicted. As the clock nears 11 each night I remind myself that I should go to bed, that I’ll get all the exciting news in the morning. Then, I ignore myself and stay up. I can’t help it. How often to do you get to see the human will triumph? All those bodies are physical perfection, trained beyond measure so when one beats another, it has to be one soul simply wanted it more. That’s miraculous to me in the true sense of the word.

Serving the Dreams of Others

All of us think we live under pressure to make good, but ours pales in compared to that of the Olympians. Imagine knowing every day that your parents, family, friends, community and nation were piling their own hopes and dreams on your shoulders. No small wonder that Alicia Sacramone, team captain, had a few bobbles during the gymnastics finals. You or I would be having a nervous breakdown in her place, don’t you think. I’ve deep admiration for her and the other fine athletes who are willing to embrace the needs of others so completely.

I’m taking that to heart as I relaunch ADRPracticebuilder.com I want to bring that spirit of dedication to helping you and other mediators build great practices. The challenge of doing my best for you will be an honor.

And, I say that because I had the opportunity to connect with generous, kind, talented mediators who were part of the Practicebuilder community, and I know the new launch will attract equally fine folks.

They told me that they grew and were inspired by me and each other. I felt the same. So, it’s gonna be a lovefest when we do a soft launch on Friday. (That means the site won’t be officially open yet, but I’m sneaking a few members in early-see box on top right to sign up)

Knowing What You Want

Conflict is inevitable. So, even as I’m devoting myself to you I know that there’s a tension. It’s between what I want to do and what will happen. To serve everyone, I want to create a huge mentoring program that addresses every problem, nurtures every mediator and leaves no resource untried. Where thousands of mediators at any stage could join in and be completely satisfied. That would be an effort worthy of Alicia or Misty May-Treanor.

However, I also have to please myself. I like being able to relate to each member individually. Knowing that you tried something new and succeeded, sharing your progress really makes me happy. It feels like the reason I’m here. If there were thousands of members, surely, some of that intimacy would get lost. There’s the rub.

My gold medal moment will be when the mentorship is an engaged community that collaborates with each other to develop new markets and ways of practicing. When hundreds of members have friends and colleagues across the nation and the world. When mediators share hundreds of stories about how unbundling their mediation skills raised their practices to levels of success they never thought possible. I get teary just thinking about it.

Putting in an Olympic sized Effort

I wrote this post for you, but mainly for me today. Like you, I struggle with wanting more. Like you, I see where I’d like to be but sometimes get lost. You know what? It’s all good.

It’s not the quantity of lives I can touch that matters (although I am planning to grow to over 500 members by the end of next year). It’s the quality of life- of satisfaction, of fun- that I can help mediators to achieve that truly matters to me.

I know it’s possible because I’ve lived a very full professional life as an ADR entrepreneur. I’ve achieved my personal and financial goals, which is part of the reason I’m retiring from conflict work to focus on the mentorship. I did it and so can you. And, I want to be in the stands roaring with joy, just like Mike’s mom, when you do.
