Lowe's Companies Inc. Lawsuit
Settlement reached in federal gender discrimination lawsuit.
Lowe's Companies Inc. settles federal lawsuit
Mountain Home, AR: (May-26-08) Leanna Juarez brought a federal lawsuit against Lowe's Companies Inc., alleging that she was discriminated against on the basis of her gender. The suit, filed in the US District Court, Western District of Arkansas in Harrison, stated that Juarez was working at Lowe's in TX and accepted a transfer to work as a sales manager at Mountain Home's store in December 2005. She was the only female management member at the store, and due to that fact, she claimed she was excluded from management meetings and was not allowed to perform duties that were in her position. Though she complained to the operations manager, store manager, two human-resources managers and a set-up manager about her treatment, she stated that she was retaliated against and assigned to unload an entire insulation truck without assistance and was denied help. Records show that in May 2007, Juarez filed the lawsuit against Lowe's, asking for recognition that she was subjected to unlawful discriminatory practices, seeking back pay, compensatory and punitive damages, attorney's fees and other prosecuting costs. Sources on both sides of the dispute stated that a settlement has been reached in the case, in which the case was dismissed with prejudice. Terms of the settlement agreement were not disclosed.
