King: Immigration Reform a Democratic Plot

Posted on May 19, 2013
There's a reason the GOP leadership is hoping immigration reform finally moves this year. They're brand with Hispanic voters is terrible and they need to show that they're a party that has a place for this fast growing segment of the electorate. So they must have cringed when they saw this story on CNN: A prominent House conservative said Tuesday that the immigration reform bill under consideration in the Senate is part of an ongoing plot to build a massive new Democratic voting bloc...

Posted on May 16, 2013
I'll be keeping an eye on the hearings and preparing a summary of the approved amendments hopefully tonight or in the am tomorrow.

Summary of Day's Amendments to Senate Bill 744 - 5/16/2013

Posted on May 16, 2013
Title IV was finished and the Senate Judiciary Committee moved on to Title III dealing with interior enforcement. The EB-5 amendment was passed with little discussion, but is fairly massive - 31 pages - and will profoundly change that program. Here's my summary of the changes passed in today's markup...

Posted on May 14, 2013
The Senate Judiciary Committee began this morning wrapping up Title I amendments before moving on the non-immigrant visas in Title IV. They'll pick up there on Thursday and then will try to get in to the E-Verify provisions. Here is my summary of the 15 amendments that passed today...

Posted on May 12, 2013
Wired Magazine's David Kravets raises some serious questions tied to the new E-Verify biometric requirements in the proposed immigration legislation. How serious of a threat to Americans' liberties does it pose? Talk amongst yourselves.

Issa To Be a Big Player on House Side

Posted on May 11, 2013
Darryl Issa (R-CA)has generally not been a major player on immigration. The House Oversight Committee Chairman has been tasked with crafting a skilled immigration bill that will be considered by the House Judiciary Committee. The news is generally considered good for those in favor of skilled worker immigration...

American Conservative Union Endorses Immigration Reform

Posted on May 10, 2013
The ACU, the oldest membership-based conservative group in the US, has issued a letter strongly endorsing immigration reform. One more sign that immigration reform WILL happen this year. Here's the ACU statement: ?President Obama and the liberals in the Senate have planned for a long time to use executive power and push legislation that would legalize those immigrants here illegally quickly with no border security, no interior security, and no reform of our legal immigration process...

Summary of All Amendments to Immigration Bill Approved on 5/9 by Senate Immigration Subcommittee

Posted on May 09, 2013
The Senate Judiciary Committee met all day and considered 36 amendments to S. 744. Some were clearly poison pills deisgned to make the bill unpassable and all of those failed. 21 were passed. The day began by passing a technical corrections amendment that replaced all of the originally introduced S...

Anti-Immigrant Heritage Foundation Issues Surprising Report Saying Immigration Costly

Posted on May 08, 2013
I know. I couldn't believe it either. No credible economists are backing up the study claiming that the immigration bill will cost zillions. I'm not going to waste time critiquing this joke of a report since so many others have already done so. I'll just remind readers that there have been many, many other better studies saying jsut the opposite...

Heritage Study Co-Author Opposed Hispanic Immigration Due to Their Low IQ

Posted on May 08, 2013
The Heritage report is easy enough to criticize just on its face. But when you learn a little about the person behind the report, you get a better picture of what is happening here.

Germans Prosecuting Alleged Nazi Camp Guard Deported in 1983

Posted on May 07, 2013
The US deported Hans Lipshis in 1983 after it concluded he lied about his Nazi past. But the German government never prosecuted him because they could not confirm the role he played during his employment at the Auschwitz death camp. Now they have finally arrested Lipshis arguing that even if they don't know precisely what role he played, he can be prosecuted as an accessory...

Amendment-palooza

Posted on May 07, 2013
The antis have a strategy of trying to slow down CIR by proposing a jillion amendments. Most are in the gimme a break category and have no chance. National Journal has a good run down of the politics at work here. One test will be regarding amendments that change some of the negotiated major provisions of the bill on issues like guest workers and the legalization program...

NYT: US Silicon Valley Companies Responsible for Anti-Indian Staffing Company Rules in Senate Bill

Posted on May 05, 2013
The Times has an interesting piece about the background of the H-1B provisions in the Senate immigration bill. In particular, the role that some of the largest American tech companies played not only in getting the H-1B cap raised, but in making it much more difficult for IT staffing companies - particularly the big Indian IT staffing firms - to be able claim numbers in the cap...

Goodlatte and House Gang of Eight Could Both Come out Winners on Immigration Bill

Posted on May 03, 2013
The AP has an interesting article mainly profiling Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), the chair of the House Judiciary Committee. The story raises an intresting possibility - namely that Goodlatte could make the hardliners happy by considering immigration reform in a piecemeal fashion and possibly only approve one or two bills that avoid some of the provisions that will have a hard time passing...

New NFAP Report Challenges Wisdom of Proposed H-1B Restrictions

Posted on May 02, 2013
Senators Durbin and Grassley have succeeded in slipping in a number of foolish protectionist provisions in S.744 that will impose all sorts of new taxes and disruptive restrictions that will make the H-1B program a lot less efficient. The provisions will also probably result in the US being sued under the GATS, the world trade in services treaty...

The Cato folks have posted the video of the program at the Capitol today in which I participated. I talked about sections of the bill I liked that the media hasn't discussed. Texas Notarios Fined Nearly $1 Million in Civil Action

Posted on April 24, 2013
Thanks to my friend Paul Parsons in Austin for sending this. A notario outfit in Texas has been hit with a $1,000,000 judgment based on providing fraudulent immigration services. These types of people have been around for a while and they tend to come out of the woodwork when we get closer to any kind of change in the law...

Posted on April 24, 2013
22 years ago, Jeb Bush's father was the President, but his status as First Son did not prevent immigration agents from showing up at his family residence and arresting the family's housekeeper who was later deported. Bush cites the deportation as having raised his consciousness about the country's immigration problems...
